Arrival information:

When you arrive at Kilimanjro Airport (JRO) there will be three stages to your arrival.

  1. Immigration – There will be separate lines for East Africans, individuals with their visa and individuals without their visa.  If you are obtaining your visa upon arrival you simply need the visa form provided on the airplane or next to the immigration line, $50 USD and your passport.
  2. Baggage Claim – If any bags are missing you will need to fill out forms with the airline before you leave the airport.
  3. Customs – Go through the line for people with nothing to delcare.

After you go through these areas you will pass through doors where you will see many guides waiting for their clients.  Your Abrojaley Africa Ajabu guide will be waiting for you among the other drivers with a company sign that has your name on it.

Exchanging Money:
Tanzania does not control the valuation of its currency. The exchange rate floats freely on the international market. The best rate is obtained at one of several Bureaus de Change in the cities - especially Arusha, Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar. Hotels will exchange currency for you, but these are rarely the best rates. Do NOT exchange on the street. Just find a nice looking Bureau de Change (your guide can take you to a good place) and most will have a similar rate. Do be conscious of your surroundings when changing the money and when leaving the bureau de change. At the bureau de change you will see the exchange rates posted. The best rate is for new-version $100 USD bills. Everything else gets a worse rate, especially older bills or bills that are smaller than $50.  We recommend using Tanzanian money for the smaller tips like a porter or waiter, but USD for your safari guide.

Additionally, you can pay for drinks and most other items in either TSh or USD in tourist hotels, but usually the best rate will be given if you purchase those items in shillings. If you are going to pay for items in USD, then it is best to bring lots of small bills as change is sometimes difficult to find. If you are going to pay in shillings, then it's best to change money in Arusha and then make sure that you ask for small bills. The largest bills are 10,000 and this is approximately $8. When you change money they will probably give the vast majority in 10,000 bills and it would be wise to ask for some 1000s ($.80) and 5000s ($4).

Personal Expenses:

As noted in your contract drinks with meals, gratuities, laundry, select meals (where noted) and other personal expenses are not included in your package. We have compiled this list of expenses so that you can better budget your incidental costs.  Costs are average.

Beer and Wine: $2-3 per drink
Mixed Drinks: $4-5 per drink
