| Kiswahili Language Training |
At Abrojaley Africa Ajabu we have expert language trainers (used by SIT, Yale University, an Washington University students) and classroom facilities for interested persons. | We also hold Work Camps in the Bangata community. These consist of short term projects (1-3 weeks) that directly benefit the community at large. Some examples include painting the local primary or secondary school, digging community pit latrines, starting a community garden; building a cement structure for community use; or any other project your group has in mind. The participants are housed and fed either at Abrojaley Africa Ajabu or the Work Camp can be held concurrently with a Homestay (in this case the participants would be placed at homes in the community). The duration of the Work Camp would depend upon the type of project. We can accommodate up to 25 people at a Work Camp | Abrojaley Africa Ajabu runs a Cultural Centre and provide interested individuals or groups with the opportunity to live with a Tanzanian family in the surrounding Bangata community. These families are hand-selected by us for their dependability, hospitality, and openness to new experiences. We conduct periodical interviews with families that express interest in hosting a visitor. While staying at your host family's house you will participate in all facets of their daily lives from cooking, to gardening, to learning some basic Kiswahili. Many of the participants in these homestays form lasting friendships that transcend the two to three week visit.
Homestay opportunities are available for groups of 10 or more. | Activity Duration: 1-2 hours Location: Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
An authentic glimpse into the distinctive Masai culture becomes accessible to eco-tourists in Tanzania. Preservation of their proud traditions has set the Masai apart from other indigenous groups in Tanzania, and embodies a side of Africa with which few outsiders make contact. Masai Expeditions will offer visitors a memorable opportunity to interactively experience the Masai way of life through day trips and overnight stays in a boma (traditional family dwelling). Guests will be able to participate in a variety of unique cultural activities, and encouraged to delve as deep into the experience as possible! Program- Small groups of people (3-6) make the safari into the boma as either a day trip or overnight venture.
- Upon visitors’ arrival in the village, they are welcomed with a traditional performance of dancing and singing, and given a short introduction to the village.
- If staying overnight, time will be given to settle into their guest house: a traditionally built hut, with amenities to suit the comfort level of Western guests (ie, bedding, bathing details to be developed);
- Choice of activities will be laid out and scheduled: village tours; additional dancing, singing and ceremonial performances; walking bush safaris and hikes; field talks on medicinal plants and the different ways that the Masai use their environment for everyday purposes; animal watching, tracking, and introduction to the traditional ways of keeping livestock; weaponry; storytelling; as well as participation in the creation of and option to purchase Masai handicrafts
- The purchase of handicrafts will be kept a distinctly separate activity (ie., a small market area will be created), as to avoid the overt exchange of cash within the boma;
- Meals will include the sharing of traditional cuisine prepared by their hosts (including the option of the ceremonial goat feast), as well;
- All the while, visitors will be encouraged to bring questions to the attention of their hosts, actively inquiring about the lifestyle of the Masai. Onsite will be Masai host(s) fluent in both English and Kiswahili.
